A <a href=\"https:\/\/agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br\/radioagencia-nacional\/economia\/audio\/2026-03\/brasileiros-podem-usar-pix-para-pagar-em-lojas-fisicas-na-argentina\">new<\/a> is the result of a partnership between Banco do Brasil and Banco da Patagonia, the Argentine subsidiary of the Brazilian institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How it works is simple: the establishment displays a QR Code on a compatible machine or device, the user scans the code through their bank's app (it doesn't have to be Banco do Brasil) and confirms the Pix payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No prior registration, Argentine bank account or any special configuration is required. The app itself does the currency conversion automatically at the time of payment, displaying the amount in Reais, Argentine pesos and dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The debit is made directly from the Brazilian current or savings account, and the transaction appears on the statement as an ordinary Pix and the debit of the IOF (Tax on Financial Operations). On the merchant's side, however, the amount is received in Argentine peso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other way around has also been working since February: Brazilian merchants can receive payments from Banco de Patagonia account holders via QR Pix in Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"o-que-muda-para-quem-viaja-a-argentina\">What changes for those traveling to Argentina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Brazilian tourists, there is a gain in convenience. Argentina has been a popular destination, partly due to the exchange rate asymmetry that favors the real, and the difficulty of operating with cash or international cards at acceptable rates was a sticking point. Pix solves this problem in a practical way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Banco do Brasil said it intends to expand the functionality to other countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia, prioritizing regions with a higher concentration of Brazilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"o-que-vem-junto-com-a-conveniencia\">What comes with convenience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two points that deserve attention for those who think beyond immediate practicality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first is <strong>IOF<\/strong>. As it is a foreign exchange operation, the transaction is subject to the Financial Operations Tax, a federal tax levied on foreign exchange operations. The current rate for travel exchange is 1.1%, but the federal government has already signaled its interest in revising the IOF rates on international transactions - which could make this type of operation more expensive in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second is <strong>traceability<\/strong>. Every payment made via Pix abroad is a documented transaction: amount, establishment, date and time, all recorded on the Brazilian bank statement and reported to the IRS as a foreign exchange transaction. For those who use trips abroad as part of their wider financial planning, this is a relevant piece of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It's not an absolute novelty - international cards already worked like this. But Pix, due to its instantaneous, low-cost nature and high adoption, tends to replace the use of cash much more efficiently than cards. The practical result is that a greater proportion of transactions abroad will be traceable by default, not by exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"o-contexto-mais-amplo\">The wider context<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch of Pix in Argentina comes during a week in which Brazil is also debating limits on the use of cash - the <a href=\"https:\/\/soberano.news\/en\/legal-structures\/cc-approves-bill-limiting-cash-in-brazil\/\">Senate CCJ approves bill restricting physical transactions<\/a> and prohibits any use of cash in real estate transactions. The direction of the two movements is the same: <strong>more digitization, more tracking, less room for transactions outside the system.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pix's integration with other countries is, from this angle, a natural extension of this trend. The Brazilian Central Bank's infrastructure is being exported, and with it, the transaction monitoring model that Pix enables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who travel to Argentina for tourism and want convenience without additional worries, the service is welcome.
